PELICAN GIRLS WITH JULIA MALYE
Wednesday May 15 2024 - 7:00 p.m. - The Red Wheelbarrow

Julia Malye will be joining The Red Wheelbarrow to discuss her novel Pelican Girls. Inspired by a true story, this stunning story captures the never-before-told journey of the Baleine Brides: a ship full of young women plucked from a Paris asylum and sent to marry settlers in North America's rough Louisiana Territory. Among this group are three unlikely friends: a sharp-tongued twelve-year old orphan, a mute ‘madwoman,’ and an accused abortionist. Charlotte, Pétronille, and Geneviève, along with the dozens of other women aboard La Baleine, have no knowledge of what lies ahead and no control over their futures. Strangers brought together by fate, these brave and fierce young women will face extraordinary adversity—pirates, slavedrivers, sickness, war—but also the private trauma of heartbreak and unrequited love, children born and lost, cruelty and unexpected pleasure, and a friendship forged in fire that will sustain through the years.

The Red Wheelbarrow is two independent bookstores on the Left Bank of Paris opposite the Luxembourg garden. We are at No. 11 rue de Medicis and No. 9 rue de Medicis. No. 9 is now our children’s bilingual bookstore called The Red Ballon.

Originally we were in the Marais where we opened in 2001 at 13 rue Charles V. In 2003 expanded to 22 rue Saint Paul. We closed in 2012 to reopen on rue de Medicis at 9 rue de Medicis in 2018 and we expanded to 11 rue de Medicis in 2021.
