Julia Malye will be joining The Red Wheelbarrow to discuss her novel Pelican Girls. Inspired by a true story, this stunning story captures the never-before-told journey of the Baleine Brides: a ship full of young women plucked from a Paris asylum and sent to marry settlers in North America's rough Louisiana Territory. Among this group are three unlikely friends: a sharp-tongued twelve-year old orphan, a mute ‘madwoman,’ and an accused abortionist. Charlotte, Pétronille, and Geneviève, along with the dozens of other women aboard La Baleine, have no knowledge of what lies ahead and no control over their futures. Strangers brought together by fate, these brave and fierce young women will face extraordinary adversity—pirates, slavedrivers, sickness, war—but also the private trauma of heartbreak and unrequited love, children born and lost, cruelty and unexpected pleasure, and a friendship forged in fire that will sustain through the years.

Book Launch on April 3

Hello friends,

We are very pleased to host the Paris book launch of Light in Dark Times on Sunday, April 3 at 16H (4pm).

Light in Dark Times is the new graphic novel written by Alisse Waterston and illustrated by Charlotte Corden. The book weaves together philosophy, art and anthropology to explore weighty themes. The beautiful illustrations serve to underscore its ultimately hopeful message and takes the reader on an unforgettable journey.

The launch will be moderated by Kate Gavino, author and illustrator of Sanpaku, Last Night’s Reading and the soon to be published novel A Career in Books.

The launch will be held at our No. 11 rue de Medicis location. The event is free but please register for the event by emailing parisredwheelbarrowbookstore@gmail.com.
